ENGLISH HERITAGE – AW12
With the return of the Barbour, the knitted polo neck and the Hunter welly, the catwalk and high-street alike are endorsing the English heritage trend. Spurred on by the Queen’s Jubilee and the triumph of Team GB, everyone is keen to celebrate Britain’s recent success and display their heritage wardrobe.
For anyone unsure on how to approach this trend: luxurious fabrics are a must. Country glamour can be ensured with fabrics like tweed and tartan, herringbone and check. This structured Vivienne Westwood jacket (found in GarmentQuarter) is a perfect example of how to modernise the way you wear tartan:
Team with a pair of black skinny jeans and knee-high riding boots, or a slim fitting midi skirt, and you will have achieved the two Stella McCartney looks perfectly. And Stella isn’t the only celebrity designer ruling this trend. Victoria Beckham (GarmentQuarter) also has a selection of leather satchels and slouchy knit dresses to perfect the casual heritage style:
Accessorising this trend is simple. Brooches, leather gloves, waist-belts and fedora hats are all essentials and work effortlessly with the A/W season. PRINT DOMINATION
Unless you’ve managed to escape every fashion magazine for the last few months, you’ll be well aware that big, bold prints are a massive trend for A/W. As a result of this, print is in all the stores right now and it can be tricky deciphering what to buy and how to wear it.
Printed jeans and trousers are a stylist favourite at the moment and are being fully endorsed by celebrities like Cherry Healey, Katie Holmes and Jessie J
Whether you go for the 1950’s floral print, the geometric pattern or the elegant baroque, the high street is offering something for everyone, and there will be something to suit your style.
Zara and H&M both have an enviable selection of printed trousers in subtle floral prints and monochrome colouring – perfect if the thought of prints covering your bottom half is slightly daunting! For a simple style that can easily be worn with a woolly knit, River Island are selling a pair of leggings featured here. Whilst those of you who are more daring, check out these eye-popping, digitally floral trousers by Ted Baker:
Mary Katrantzou, a British designer who hit high-street stardom with her range of printed dresses and t-shirts for Topshop, has made her mark by collaborating more printed pieces with Ted Baker. If you fancy standing out at the New Year’s party, head down to Quaker’s Friar for a range of dresses that allows you to boast the print, pastel and oriental trend all in one item!

CELEBRITY CHEFS AND DELICIOUS TREATS AT CABOT CIRCUS FOOD FESTIVAL
Cabot Circus is set to host a two-day culinary extravaganza this weekend. Celebrity chefs Jean Christophe Novelli and Dean Edwards will take to the stage to showcase their culinary talents along with head chefs from restaurants within Cabot Circus.
The free event will see the celebrity chefs demonstrate their skills and reveal the secrets that have helped them achieve their successes. On Saturday Jean Christophe Novelli will share some of his culinary secrets with us and also judge the final of the Cookie Competition, where the winner will scoop £100 worth of Carluccios vouchers. The excitement continues on Sunday when Dean Edwards will teach the Bristol crowd some delicious and simple recipes.
Jean Christophe Novelli said, “I am looking forward to being part of the Food Festival at Quakers Friars. Visitors to the event can expect to see wonderful dishes being prepared healthily, using local produce. The recipes will be full of flavours that some may find unusual to combine but the results will be fabulous I promise.”
Dean Edwards said: “I’m delighted to be appearing at the Closer to Food event at Cabot Circus in my hometown of Bristol. The city has a fantastic reputation for food and drink, a great range of restaurants and culinary talent. I’ll be cooking some exciting recipes at the event and look forward to welcoming the people of Bristol in August.”
As well as picking up some expert tips, visitors will be able to indulge in seasonal delicacies from a special local produce market, which includes a selection of cakes, artisan breads, locally-produced cheeses, chutneys, sausages and more.
There will also be a variety of stalls for visitors to explore, with Brasserie Blanc, Frankie & Benny’s and Harvey Nichols amongst those with produce and items on offer for shoppers.
Best of British!
Today is the day – unless you have been hibernating for the past year, you will no doubt be gripped with sporting fever, and Quakers Friars is celebrating the start of the games by showing all of the action for free on a giant screen – the perfect opportunity for soaking up the competitive atmosphere and cheering on Team GB!
If you didn’t manage to secure tickets to the sporting event of the year but still want to experience the excitement, then head to Quakers Friars for live open air screenings and follow the most hotly anticipated competitions.

Festival trends
While there may be no Glastonbury; The Isle of Wight, Hackney, Leeds and Reading all make sure that that the British festival season gets in to full swing. Through the mud, mosh pits and dodgy glow sticks (please don’t try and drink out of them) some great fashion trends have emerged each festival season, and this year is no different. As Ted Hughes said, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only inadequate clothing”. Festivals inspire creativity and so we believe they are a great place to spy the latest trends and keep you one step ahead of the rest.
Festival Classics
There has been a lot of denim flying around this festival season and with it being so versatile, the celebrities have been rocking out denim jeans, shorts and jackets in all different shapes and sizes. We’re a big fan of these MOTO Gold Stud, bleach wash Denim Hotpants from Topshop. A classic festival item that can go with almost anything; from light frilly tops to heavy bomber jackets. We think it would look great with this rather neat flower girl garland adorning your locks, also from Topshop.
Go Hippy
Floral patterns have been extremely popular around all the festivals and again go great with a huge variety of items. Get back to your hippy roots and feel the music man with a great selection of cut off floral tops from River Island, top it off with a cropped leather jacket and you’ll be mixing with Alexa Cheung in no time.
Be a Lad, Go Bold
Festival fashion for men has embraced bold colours and patterns, so stand out this season by embracing all things vivid. However, if the thought of bright clothes isn’t for you, try teaming coloured bottoms with plain white t-shirts, or go for the more conservative nautical theme. Pastel colours have been tipped to be huge this summer and so festivals are the perfect place to try them out.

Classic Wimbledon
Forget the trophies; Wimbledon would be nothing without strawberries and cream, and at Cabot Circus this year same is true. STREET FOOD FESTIVAL BRINGS POP-UP CUISINE AND LIVE MUSIC TO QUAKERS FRIARS
Quakers Friars is set to become a foodie paradise next month as the UK’s biggest street food festival comes to the historic piazza at Cabot Circus for the first time.
Taking place over three days from Friday 18th to Sunday 20th May, the free festival will feature some of the UK’s finest ‘food trucks’ offering a variety of delicious street cuisine – a new concept that has gained popularity over recent months in London’s Southbank.
Colston Hall will also host a live stage throughout the event which will showcase some of Bristol’s best new musical talent. Featuring a range of local bands playing folk, acoustic and world music, performances will take place every lunchtime, afternoon and evening during the three-day event.
The street food festival will see Quakers Friars brought to life with festival-inspired food stalls and retailers and will offer the perfect opportunity for the whole family to come and enjoy tasty food, drink and free entertainment and music. Some of the vendors appearing include:
- The Swallow Bakery: boutique bakery offering speciality cupcakes and dessert pies
- The Hungry Gecko: A Masterchef finalist specialising in vegetarian Asian street food
- What the Dickens: iconic British dishes and revived vintage recipes
- Café Mor: seafood specialists from Pembrokeshire and winner of the British Street Food Award 2011
- Big Apple Hot Dogs: inspired by New York, made using only natural and free-range ingredients
- Byron Burgers: proper burgers and the ultimate in comfort food
- Churros Bros: chocolaty warm churros
“Street Food is the most important UK food trend in years” says Richard Johnson, the author of Street Food Revolution and the founder of the British Street Food Awards. “That’s why Heston is singing the praises of the street food revolution in the next issue of GQ. And Jamie has gone and got his own ice cream truck. Served out of the coolest vans, trucks and trailers, street food offers up an exciting way to eat that doesn’t break the bank. It’s throwing up a new generation of food heroes, and has given us the two most important new restaurant openings in living memory – Pitt Cue and Co and Meat Liquor. They both started out trading on the streets. The Cabot Circus event will be packed with new talent, and showcase some sure-fire contenders for the British Street Food Awards 2012 in September.”
The free event will take place from 11am to 8pm from Friday 18th until and Sunday 20th May, with the first bands playing at 12:00pm each day.

The spring / summer fashion show – trendtastic!
April was a pretty wet month, but the heavens closed and sunshine was upon us for the Cabot Circus spring / summer fashion shows – literally! The weekend of free catwalk shows presented fabulous, refreshing and inspiring new season trends.
With pampering treats and discounts visitors could indulge themselves into the fashion world and follow the recommendations of one of London’s hottest stylists, JP, who presented and styled the show.
We have picked some of our favourite trends from the show. We can’t wait to see them hitting the Bristol streets!!
Miami Fashion Vice dominated in style with bold colours and patterns combined with 1950s high waists, halter necks and wiggle skirts.
Fantastic fabrics are massive this season. Embroidery, chiffon layers, lace, beads, sequins and so much more. Whether it’s for relaxed daywear or night time chic, tactile fabric is a must have – yummy!
Mother nature holds the power when it comes to this gorgeous trend – earthy tones with sunny highlights create a natural looking style teamed with tie die, bold patterns or woven elements. This should not be missed!
White is the new black. – less is more this season. Focusing on the garment for the cut and shape makes this colour always an eye-catcher – stand out in style!
Men are also standing out this season and should be boldly wearing pattern their patterns and colours. Chinos are a must have – as always. Gents combine them with blazers for a relaxed look – and roll up those sleeves!
Sock it to me! Socked ankles are everywhere this season and top the cherry on the cake for an outstanding look – so dress those ankles!
And we can’t forget the coolest kids in Bristol. Local Dance School Hype strutted their stuff on the catwalk. The grown-up models have some serious rivals.
FREE FASHION SHOWS BRING FABULOUS SPRING STYLE TO THE HEART OF THE CITY
Fashionistas from Bristol and beyond will be heading to Cabot Circus this April for a series of free fashion shows presenting the hottest trends for Spring and Summer.
Taking place under the Cabot Circus glass roof on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 April, the ‘Spring Summer 2012 Fashion Show’ will feature the latest looks from the new collections available from stores in the centre.
And, with outfits from high-street to high-end, the catwalk will showcase something for every budget and taste – whether you want to indulge your feminine side with pretty florals, grab attention with this season’s acid brights or spice it up a bit with the latest Miami trends.
As the weekend of free fashion shows begins, savvy shoppers will be able to enjoy some fantastic discounts and offers at many of Cabot Circus’ stores and restaurants.
Visitors can also indulge in free treatments at the ‘pamper lounges’, where experts from House of Fraser, Harvey Nichols, Sanctuary Spa, Seanhanna and the Body Shop will be on-hand to treat shoppers and talk through the latest hair and beauty trends.
Shoppers can also get inspiration from fabulous clothes and brilliant beauty buys that will be showcased in glass display cases dotted around Cabot Circus and Quakers Friars.
Retailers that will be featured in the Fashion Show include House of Fraser, Harvey Nichols, French Connection, Ted Baker, Fred Perry, Next, River Island, Bank, New Look, Reiss and Warehouse – and many more.
Local street dance company Hype – which has previously won awards including the World Street Dance Championships and worked with artists Neyo and Sean Paul – will be participating in the fashion show this year for the first time. Young members from the Bristol-based dance crew will be turning their hand to modeling for the day as they strut their stuff on the catwalk for a special childrenswear show at 5pm on Saturday.
The Cabot Circus Fashion Show are being presented by JP, one of London’s hottest stylists, who will give even the most fashion reluctant a nudge in the right direction to fulfil their style potential.

ELECTRIC ECLECTIC
If you want to make a bold statement, vibrant, acid bright colours are huge this year. This is a trend that you can’t tone down so it’s all about mixing colours together – not for shrinking violets. Put together pinks, blues, yellows and greens for a new take on last year’s colour blocking trend. If clashing isn’t your thing but you still like this look, try it with denim, which will give you a flavour of the trend.
FLEUR-TY PRINTS
Spring is when nature comes alive, and this is reflected this season. Summer is looking hot with colour prints – from vintage-inspired florals, to luscious paradise islands and tropical flowers. Whether you go for floaty, structured or somewhere in between, achieve this look by embracing the traditional and injecting it with the right amount of attitude. WATERCOLOUR
Summer becomes mouth-watering this year, with yummy colours like orange sorbet, lemon sherbet and rosy apple, giving a sweet and delicious look – good enough to eat!
The subtle, sugar pastels give a feminine, clean palette. Wear together or with white, or toughen it up with a rock t-shirt and dangerously high heels for a cute and candy appearance.
I <3 MY MUM!!
Drop the bouquet, ditch those predictable cards, Mother’s Day is about celebrating our magnificent mums, and we have nosed through the retailers at Cabot Circus and Quakers Friars to provide the alternative gift guide for your special lady!
Not a blossom in sight here as we give you a couple of different suggestions that will make your mum very happy indeed.

All women LOVE a good scarf, and we have found some beauties! Crew clothing have a lovely range of scarves, and our favourite has to be the gorgeous butterfly scarf– and we love the monochrome number by Timney at House of Fraser.

Oscars 2012: Red carpet trends
The lives of Hollywood stars are full of glitzy awards and glamorous premiers, but nothing compares to the biggest awards show on earth – The Oscars.
The Oscars are the chance for stars to firmly place themselves at the forefront of red carpet fashion, or in some cases create a little stir with a flamboyant take on Oscars attire – we all remember the Bjork ensemble circa 2001 (eeek!).
We have trawled through the unending amount of opulent gowns and sultry suits of the 2012 Oscars to bring you some of the hottest trends directly from the red carpet, and this year the stars haven’t failed to disappoint!
Ladies in red
Women of the Oscars were not afraid of matching their dress to the red carpet at the awards this year, with a number of red dresses gracing the ceremony – our favourites were Michelle Williams in a strapless tulle Louis Vuitton gown, and Natalie Portman in a vintage dress from the Dior archives (1954).
Walking Oscars
You need to have a lot of gusto to don a gold frock – but the starlets who braved the image did it in style, including lady of the awards Meryl Streep in Lanvin, and Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain.
White isn’t just for Weddings
Romance hit the red carpet this year with a sea of whites and ivories. Floor-length white gowns were hauled out of the wedding stereotype and pushed to the forefront of Hollywood style. Rooney Mara looked positively angelic in a gorgeous gown from Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci. Our favourite dress award must go to Gwyneth Paltrow, who hit the style nail on the head in a no-fuss Tom Ford caped dress –what a knockout!
Sexy starlets
Effortlessly sexy isn’t something many people have got, but of course Angeline Jolie is an exception to the rule in Atelier Versace.
Hollywood of old
Some dresses are exceptions to style rules, and are beautiful just as they are! Milla Jovovich looked absolutely stunning (and so she should!), and Kate Mara oozed 1920’s couture, both in Elie Saab – doing what he does best.

Red Carpet Fashion
So silent film The Artist proved to be one of the winners at the 69th annual Golden Globes Awards, but there were also winners and losers on the red carpet. Kicking off the film awards season, The Golden Globes is THE first chance in the awards season for stars to shine and showcase their style credentials – and last night saw some truly stunning looks, with many opting for bright tones or ivory gowns.
We loved Angelina’s dress – adding her own unique style to the classic nude tone with flashes of scarlett. And the 40′s ruffle detail is bang on trend too.
Michelle Williams flew the flag for colour and neatly incorporated the velvet trend too…
To get the red carpet look on a more realistic budget, Coast – available at House of Fraser in Cabot Circus has some great show-stopping gowns like this ‘Savannah’ maxi dress, £195.

To kick off the Cabot Circus A/W Fashion Tour, House of Fraser is holding an exclusive fashion evening at the Showcase Cinema De Lux on Thursday, 22nd September.
Guests will be treated to a fashion show of key A/W trends, featuring brands such as Biba, Pied a Terre and Label Lab all presented by top London stylist JP. Style advisors will be on hand to give advice on what to wear for your body shape and guests will also be welcomed with complimentary drinks and canapés, and sent home with a luxury goodie bag.
Tickets cost £5 and are available from House of Fraser (level 1 Buy and Collect desk) and the Cabot Circus Information Desk. £1 from every ticket sold will be donated to Guide Dogs for the Blind. Get your tickets before they all go!
A/W Trend Report
Cabot Circus will be welcoming the new season in stunning style with a weekend of free catwalk shows on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 September, celebrating the hottest trends from the latest collections.
The ‘Autumn/Winter Fashion Tour’ is being held in association with the British Fashion Council and will bring together the best of the high-street and designer brands to showcase leading looks from the new season.
To give you a taste of what is to come on the catwalk, here are some of the key trends hitting the shops now for the autumn/winter season:

5. Jewel box colours
This summer we saw an explosion of colour enter our wardrobes and as we approach autumn there are no signs of this fading. With fushia, orange, emerald, colbolt and purple leading the colour parade, you will not fail to stand out this winter.
What to wear: Rock a block colour dress, contrast with brights heels to accentuate a plain outfit, or easiest of all, throw on a coat in a bright shade

He’s back!
Gok Wan and his Channel 4 team will be bringing ’Gok’s Clothes Roadshow’ to Cabot Circus in September – he loved it so much in January that he’s coming back already! Last time thousands of shoppers came to show their support as he filmed the ‘high-street / designer catwalk face off’ and he was so impressed that he’s coming back for more.
As part of the new series, Gok is currently looking for a group of three women that feel that they are in need of a wardrobe re-vamp – you don’t have to be clueless about fashion, you might just be stuck in a rut or feel that you wear the same outfits all the time. If you fancy being made over by the nation’s favourite fashionista get in touch with the production team asap!

New stores for Cabot Circus
We’re delighted to welcome two new stores to Cabot Circus – firstly Pandora, which has just opened on Brigstowe Street (near Next) and the soon-to-be-open Mango, which will also be located on Brigstowe Street.
Pandora’s modular designs offer easily interchangable part and allow you to select charms, bracelets, necklaces or beads for a variable look - giving you a classic option or tailored to your own personal style.

Nails inc cracks it
Crackle nail varnishes have been a huge trend this year – it’s easy to see why, nails that have the WOW factor and a look that is super easy to achieve at home.
For anyone not already familiar with it, crackle polish creates a crackle / shatter effect letting any other colour underneath it show through. Each nail is individual and painting the crackle polish on in different ways, strokes and directions can also vary the look.

- Apply 1 coat of your favourite nails inc base coat
- Apply 2 coats of your favourite nails inc polish. Leave to dry for 5 minutes
- Apply 1 coat of your chosen crackle shade. Have fun with this – try painting in different directions as this will affect how your design will look.
- Wait and see your nail polish appear through the cracks!
- Apply a top coat to get a glossy finish
- Marvel at the amazing nail art design you have created with such minimal effort!
